First Aid and Health
First aid is the help rendered to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury. The focus of initial aid is to provide supportive care, to preserve life, to prevent the condition from worsening, and/or to promote recovery. It includes initial intervention in a serious condition prior to the arrival of professional medical help, such as safely performing CPR or rescue breathing. It also includes the supportive treatment of minor conditions, such as applying a bandage or splinting a sprain.
First aid skills give students the ability to save a life if needed. When a student knows how to respond in an emergency, they grow in confidence and self esteem as well as increasing their teamwork and communication skills. This class is an excellent beginner class for students interested in babysitting or mentoring younger children, students involved in recreational or select sports and water activities, and students who have an interest in emergency medicine as a career path.
A Note from Mrs. Cecil:
I have quite the collection of medical supplies for our hands-on lab. There MAY be a few things I will ask the students to bring, as we get further into the school year. The students will have the option to purchase an official CPR certification card from a secure website if they so choose at the completion of our course study. They will be comfortable with CPR and basic first aid skills by the conclusion of the school year.
